What are the supported wireless cards for PCs and Macintosh models?
Most wireless cards, purchased from a computer store or shipped with your new laptop work with the UCSF wireless network. It is most important to read the setup instructions carefully, ensuring that the correct drivers are installed before you try to connect to the UCSF wireless network. A variety of wireless cards that work with the UCSF wireless network are available at the UCSF Technology Store on the I-level of the Millberry Union.

I cannot connect using my Linksys WPC11 wireless card.
Older Linksys cards have been known to be problematic in the Library's network environment. Users have reported problems specifically with the Linksys WPC11 cards. A variety of wireless cards that work with the UCSF wireless network are available at the UCSF Technology Store on the I-level of the Millberry Union.

How do I set my SSID so I can connect via wireless?
In order to connect to the wireless network you must have the network SSID set to "UCSF." Most wireless devices include a configuration utility which is active in the System Tray in Windows (usually located next to the time display in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen) or in the Menu Bar in Mac OS (usually located next to the time display in the upper right-hand corner of your screen). Open this configuration utility by double-clicking on the icon and enter UCSF (all capitals) in the field named SSID or Network Name. Then save changes. If you can't find the SSID field, please refer to the documentation that came with your wireless device.

Do I need to check the box for Data Encryption (WEP Enabled)? Do I need a password for the UCSF network?
The UCSF network is an open network which authenticates users via hardware MAC address registered in your GALEN account. The UCSF network does not use Data Encryption or password authentication in order to connect. If you are having problems connecting make sure you have unchecked any boxes for Data Encryption and that the network type is set to "Open".
