The Blumenthal East Asian Collection emphasizes the historical development of medicine and the health
sciences in China and in Japan before 1900 and the transition period from traditional Japanese medicine
to Western medicine. The collection encompasses books and journals, available for browsing and circulation
in Room 506, as well as rare materials available in Special Collections by appointment. Rare materials
include books and artifacts relating to indigenous medicine in those countries, and 400 Japanese woodblock
