PURPOSE
Obtain journal articles, books, and other materials not owned at UCSF.

Who Is Eligible?
  • -  You must be a UCSF staff, student or faculty member to place ILB requests.
  • -  You must have a current Library Borrower Account.
  • -  Materials must be related to work or study at UCSF and must not be owned by the UCSF Library.
 
How to Place Requests
The 14-digit barcode number on your ID, which begins with 21378..., is the number you will use to place requests.
 
Journal Articles
UC-eLinks
In many databases, including PubMed@UCSF, you can use UC-eLinks to order journal articles not owned by the UCSF Library, directly from your search.
 
Books and other Materials in the Melvyl Catalog
Request
Use the Request button to automatically place an interlibrary request for materials found in the Melvyl Catalog. [ more info ]
Some books and non-print materials may not be loaned because they are fragile, one-of-a-kind, or non-circulating.
 
UCSF Interlibrary Borrowing Forms
These forms can be used for all types of materials: journal articles, books, book chapters, government reports, technical reports, videos, etc. If the UCSF-owned copy is missing from the library, note this in the Author field.
 
Receiving Requested Materials
The UCSF Library does not provide rush service.
 
Articles and Book Chapters
  • -  Most articles are received within 4 working days.
  • -  If you choose web delivery, the lending campus will email you a web address where you can download your article in PDF format using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • -  If you choose paper copy, articles will be mailed to the primary address listed in your Library Borrower Account.
 
Books and Other Materials
  • -  Most items are received within 4-7 days at the UCSF Library.
  • -  You will receive an email notice that your item has arrived.
  •    Parnassus Campus Users:
    Pick up your book at the Circulation Desk.
  •    UCSF Laurel Heights Users:
    When you receive notice, email Circulation by noon (Mon-Fri) to arrange for material to be placed on the Laurel Heights/Mt. Zion Shuttle.
  •    Mission Bay Users:
    When you receive notice, email Circulation by noon (Mon-Fri) to arrange to pick up materials at the Library at the Community Center.
  •  
  • -  Loan periods vary. Generally, a book may be kept for 2-4 weeks. Renewals are sometimes possible.
  • -  Materials are subject to immediate recall by the lending library at any time.
 
Returning Materials
  • -  Return books and other materials by the due date to the Circulation Desk where you picked them up.
  • -  If materials are not returned by the due date, your UCSF Library privileges will be blocked, and a bill for replacement will be issued.
  • -  You are financially responsible for damage to or loss of materials from the time they are picked up until the time they are returned to the UCSF Library.
 
Fees
  • -  There are no fees for items obtained from other UC campuses.
  • -  Items obtained outside UC average $15 per article or book loan.
  • -  If the item is not available within the UC system, the Library will contact you to request authorization to extend the search. Submit an authorization for each request with your credit card number or UC Department Recharge number and the maximum you are willing to pay for each request.
  • -  Credit card information is confidential, applied to the item requested, and not saved after the transaction is complete.
  • -  Your account will be charged when we receive an invoice from the lending library. You will be billed only the fees incurred and will not be charged if the item cannot be obtained.
