RefWorks Help & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
RefWorks FAQ
What is RefWorks?
RefWorks is a widely used web-based citation management program that you can use from any computer with an internet connection, without having to install any software. Being platform independent, it will run not only on Windows and Macintosh but also on Linux, the Blackberry, and the iPhone.
You can download and install the free Cite-N-Write plugin which integrates EndNote with Microsoft Word, allowing you to easily and quickly cite references and create a paper with properly formatted citations and bibliography.
How do I access RefWorks?
Go to UCSF RefWorks login
The Library has a site license for the UCSF campus, so you're entitled to a free account while you're affiliated with UCSF. Since RefWorks is a web-based application, you don't have to download or install any software. You just need a web browser and an internet connection to the RefWorks server.
If you don't already have a RefWorks account, view the following brief tutorial:

When you create a new account, you'll receive a confirmation email with your login.
How do I connect to RefWorks when I'm off campus?
- Login to the campus network using VPN@UCSF. Then login to RefWorks as usual through your web browser.
- Use the UCSF Group Code* to connect to the RefWorks login site. Type the code in the box at the bottom and click the "Go to Login" button. You should then land on the regular RefWorks login page. Log in to your RefWorks account using the RefWorks ID and password that you set up for yourself.
