EndNote Help & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

EndNote FAQ

What is EndNote?

EndNote is a desktop citation management program, with versions available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. EndNote includes the Cite While You Write feature which integrates EndNote with Microsoft Word, allowing you to easily and quickly cite references and create a paper with properly formatted citations and a bibliography.

How do I access EndNote?

UCSF affiliates can purchase a copy from CDW, Inc. CDW-G is a preferred vendor for UC and offers educational discounts.

You may also use copies of EndNote installed on all Tech Commons computers, including those at Mission Bay. You will need a storage device, such as a flash drive, for your EndNote libraries and Word documents.

What hands-on training is available?

Library staff teach a hands-on Getting Started with Endnote class that covers basic skills such as how to create your own personal reference database and how to generate a formatted bibliography in MS Word.

Transferring references from PsycINFO to EndNote

  • In UCSF's PsycINFO database, select those citations you want to import. Hit the Save/Print/Email button. Choose Full Format, then Save as a text file to your computer. (There is no special format for EndNote; records are automatically saved with appropriate tags for EndNote to use.) Import into your EndNote library using the PsycINFO/Cambridge Scientific Abstracts import filter.
  • You may also use an EndNote Connection file for PsycINFO.  The PsycINFO Connection File that comes with EndNote must be configured with UCSF's account information in order to function. Windows users can download a copy of the file from this site using Firefox: Right click here, then select Save Link As to save this file to the Connections folder within your EndNote program. This download may not work for Mac and some Windows users in which case you should email David Owen to request a copy.

Transferring references from Google Scholar

Which method can I use to transfer references from a specific database to EndNote?

View this list of databases to see whether you can use import/filter, connection file or direct export to transfer references from a specific database to an EndNote library.

What is an EndNote Travelling Library?

Each citation in a Word document formatted with EndNote is saved with field codes that embed reference information in the document. The document therefore contains a ‘travelling library’ of references cited. The travelling library allows someone else to work on a Word document even if the EndNote library file is not present.
